Swords, Serpents, and Spices: Gameplay Mechanics Explained: First Look Deep Dive

When we set out to create Unsung Empire’s combat system, we knew we wanted something as unique as the culture it draws from. The result? A gameplay experience that blends ancient Tamil martial traditions with a touch of mystical abilities.

Let’s break down these signature moves that’ll have you playing – and slaying – in style.

Note: We’ll only be covering the ones showcased in the gameplay first look. (Reading between the line: there’s more in the final game)

Eavesdrop

Class: Wisdom

The Wisdom class isn’t about brute force – it’s about choosing the brain over the brawn. You’ll tap into conversations around (between NPCs) you and use the information gained to convince and persuade (like access restricted areas, as shown in the trailer), piece together crucial intel, and plot the next course of action.

But why stop at humans?

Animal Guide

Class: Wisdom

The Animal Guide ability lets you commune with the wildlife of our meticulously crafted world. You can call for help from nature by finding an animal to help you.

Need to know what’s happening on the other side of that fortress? The local birds might have some thoughts about that.

Your animal allies provide reconnaissance and lead you to points of interest or mission objectives.

Voice Clone

Class: Shadowcraft

If Wisdom is about gathering information, Shadowcraft is about using it creatively – and sometimes for violent ends.

The Voice Clone ability lets you clone voices you’ve learned. Guards tend to get pretty confused when they hear their captain’s voice coming from three different directions! But, don’t worry – the confusion only lasts as your trusty dagger plunges through their heart.

Reptile Attack

Class: Shadowcraft

Speaking of confusion, wait until you try the Snake attack. This ability summons spectral serpents that slither towards your enemies. It’s not just about damage – it’s about creating chaos and opportunity.

And when chaos isn’t enough?

Chili Bomb

Class: Shadowcraft

That’s when you pull out the Chili Bomb – a specially crafted smoke bomb infused with spicy hot red chilies. Trust us, your targets will be too busy crying to spot you slipping past.

Surulvaal

Class: Warfare

Now, for those who prefer their combat up close, personal, and aggressive, the Surulvaal might be your new favorite thing.

Mastering the Surulvaal requires perfect timing and positioning – one wrong move and you might end up hitting yourself! But nail the rhythm, and you’ll be conducting a symphony of steel that would make ancient Tamil warriors proud.

Focus Executions

Class: Valor, Warfare

Focus executions work in both valor and warfare classes, combining precision with raw power. Each one is a mini-choreography, inspired by the ancient Tamil martial art of Kalari. They’re not just flashy finishing moves; they’re a celebration of the warrior traditions that inspired them.

Venghai Vision

Available to all classes, the Venghai Vision represents the sharp senses of a hunting tiger. This heightened perception lets you spot enemies through walls and identify interactive elements in your environment. It’s not just about seeing – it’s about understanding your surroundings like a true warrior.

Bonus: There’s more to this but you’ll have to wait until we reveal all the juicy details about this.

A quick note on authenticity

While we’ve taken some creative liberties to make these mechanics work in a game setting, each one is inspired by real elements of Tamil culture and warfare. From the actual martial arts techniques behind the Urumi to the traditional use of chilies in Tamil cuisine (though perhaps not quite as weaponized!), we’ve worked to ensure that even our most fantastical abilities feel grounded in cultural authenticity.

Each ability has been carefully balanced to create gameplay that rewards both planning and improvisation. Whether you’re ghosting through missions without a trace or unleashing your inner warrior, these mechanics give you the tools to approach each challenge in your own way.

There’s quite some time until we release our game, but in the meantime, keep an eye on our social channels for detailed gameplay videos showcasing each of these abilities in action.

Trust me – seeing a perfectly executed SurulVaal attack is something you won’t want to miss!
